Immigration again
There is another otherwise sensible post from Chris Dillow about immigration which gives the myth of "skills" being provided by immigrants, which aren't available in the UK workforce another airing.
The "skill" in question is the willingness to turn up for work, work for a full day, then turn up again the next day, sober. This "Skill" needs to be repeated 5 times a week, 48 weeks a year. It is this "skill" that the British long-term unemployed and NEETs (or less euphemistically "Fucking bone idle chavs") lack. It is this "skill" that the kind of person who schleps across a continent in order to empty bins or wait tables has, in spades. Someone who has this "skill" can readily acquire others, usually on the job.
The idea that more Government sponsored "training" or further educational conscription 'till 18 is the answer to the underclass' shocking lifestyle, then you're an idiot (though most who think like this self-describe as "socialists", which is the same thing). The answer to inequality is not "increase benefits", but instead lies in removing the option of not working by removing them. If you give the option to people to sit on their arses watching Jeremy Kyle, whilst drinking special brew and chain smoking lambert and butler, then that is exactly what some of them will do, for the rest of their wretched lives. The Long-term unemployed and the NEET are both inevitable creatures of the welfare state.

An ability to turn up sober and on time is a skill, like any other: you can go a long way in many jobs by doing little more.
But would cutting benefits really cut immigration? I mean, who would you rather employ - the man who's crossed a continent looking for work, or the one who's only turned up for fear his benefits will be cut?
The immigrant naturally, but the relative benefits of one over the other would be reduced, and therefore probably the level of immigration.
it could boil down to:
Heroic work ethic vs. native language skills
Reducing welfare will reduce immigration because it reduces the incentives to come here i.e. less free stuff.
A glance at the unemployment by ethnicity statistics tells a slightly different story to the one you're trying to portray here. Unless, of course, Pakistani women are sitting ' on their arses watching Jeremy Kyle, whilst drinking special brew and chain smoking lambert and butler'.

I have a hippy type Portuguese friend who after 3 years of his acquaintance surprised me by informing me who his political father was. Straight from the horses mouth, he certainly believed the British welfare state was a huge incentive for Portuguese imigrants anyway. As for the Pakistani mothers of all... That's more of a human rights issue. I am extremely grateful that I can aspire for a lot more than to be the floor cleaner of a tyrant. When I did temping work as PA for the manager of a locality of Health Centres, it was quite normal for the father, mother, grandmother and children all to turn up in appropriate attire to claim the free baby formula. Imagine the queues. What does that tell you?
We ned subsidised work. Not just to throw people on the scrap heap and expect them to make a work for themself. Not all of are given breaks an contacts to the rich.
Not really sure your arguments are exactly constructive.
I would of thought you would have liked a return to more vocational apprenceships - a return to 'the good old days'.

Abolishing the welfare state and allowing free immigration are (combined) two of the most constructive ideas going.
What does it matter what you think he should think? Was there ever a time in Britain of mass government-subsidised apprenticeships in private firms?

Good point, and excellent reasons to scrap minimum wage laws, abolish the income tax, welfare state etc.
