Mental Gymnastics
I've been accused of performing mental gymnastics over party funding: What's the difference between the Labour funding row and the Tories'?
Well here goes: They're chalk and cheese:
- They're Labour's rules which are being broken - rules which were put in place in part to scupper the funding arrangements of two major donors to opposition parties.
- Labour have deliberately tried to circumvent these rules, in the case of £660,000 from Abrahams when senior officials and probably the party leadership too, clearly knew that money did not ultimately come from those appearing on the register of donors.
- The new rules on domicile were clearly written for party political gain with Ashcroft and another anti-Labour figure in mind. Ashcroft has brought, or is bringing his domicile onshore, and the origin of his money is clear....
- Unlike the Unions who are laundering taxpayers cash for the Labour Party. If this isn't corruption, I don't know what is.
- Scale: Labour are in hoc to the tune of £660,000. The Tories are guilty of accepting about £21,000 of inadmissible donations, the woolies about £25,000
- It's deliberate attempts to mislead the public which are causing the media storm rather than David Cameron or Wendy Alexander's oversight However...
- Wendy Alexander, like the Labour party in general was caught by the media, Cameron's constituency on the other hand, voluntarily owned up before the scandal broke.

9 immoderate opinions:
Throw your rock. It'll bounce of a lot of idiots before it hits the ground. Many of them work for the BBC :(
also, nowhere in the party accounts do they show the donations
they have recieved.This is illegal.

There is no doubt that Labour have behaved shabbily and broken the law.
And for that they have to put up with yet another police investigation and there could well be charges.
For breaking their own laws they will pay.
But for you to pretend the Tories are somehow clean is frankly ridiculous.
Not only is there great historic precedent of corruption within the Conservative Party, it is very evident that Lord Ashcroft's tax dealings are not transparent and his funding of the Conservatives is very likely to be illegal.
Michael Ashcroft, as was, was ennobled following a promise by the then leader William '22 pints' Haguem that he would move his businesses from Belize to the UK.
This was in 2000.
And what do we know now? Very little.
Neither Ashcroft nor the Conservatives have been decent enough to say whether he now pays tax in this country.
If he doesn't then all the donations he has made to the party - such vast amounts he essentially uses the Conservatives as his own pocket party - will be illegal.
Gordon Brown has, for the first time, said union funding will be on the table for any future party donation discussions. The Tories, cowardly, refuse to come to the table now, fearing progress might actually hinder their attack dogs.
They would rather antagonism than discussion to actually fix the system.
Also, it should be noted that both the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats do actually get funding from the state. Labour do not.
As opposition parties they get a float from taxpayers, regardless of their political persuasion, to pay for postage, letters etc. As if they need it with Ashcroft.
So in the second quarter of 2006, the Tories got £1.15m and the Lib Dems got £456,000.
I certainly object to my taxes paying for the bullshit and cacophony coming from the opposition benches.
Most Tories, including the Shadow Cabinet, are part time politicians earning vast sums on the side. It's a selfish, arrogant party that will never regain power until it is hungry enough and ready to concentrate on politics, rather than filling their boots.
Having a dinner party on NY. You're most welcome to come.

I don't suggest that the Tories are clean, merely cleanER than Labour. A much lower standard.
As for Ashcroft, I suspect he's sharp enough to have covered all the bases.
Your assertion that the Labour Party recieve no state funding is ludicrous whilst they're voting the Unions a spurious "modernisation fund" which suspiciously matches their funding of the Labour Party
Oh and Re: New year... I'll have to confer with OC domestic Ops!
Agreed. The scale of corruption in Labour is staggering, absolutely staggering.
You could feel the delight of the Mirror when it was revealed that there had been a small error with the Tories!
The Labour party have been completely imbroiled in scandal over donations and loans and it was their own law, the Lib Dims are being investigated for taking over two million pounds from an impermissible donor. There is such a thing as scale in all of this...
Not forgetting how UKIP have been treated recently...
